Vitamin K

Vit K plays a crucial role in helping the body to decide where to put calcium. In a healthy body, calcium is put into the formation and maintenance of bones and not placed on the inside of the blood vessels. When blood vessels are exposed to stress in the form of high insulin levels, or toxins from cigarette smoke, calcium is laid down to fix the damage. Cholesterol binds to the calcium forming a plaque and blocking the vessels. Vit K and Vit D work synergistically to help move calcium in the right direction. Some of the greatest dietary sources of Vit K are herbs including basil, thyme, and cilantro. For example, a single ounce of basil creates 600 times the RDA of Vit K. Dark leafy greens including kale and swiss chard are also excellent choices as are beans, and dried fruits such as prunes and kiwi. If you are supplementing your diet with Vit D, you may also need to supplement with Vit K. Please contact Ambient at 269-5000.
